Chinese Academy of Sciences Honorary Professor
This is so cool! I received an appointment 2 weeks ago to be an Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). You know I am a geek; why else would I be a member of the neurology book of the month club? Now I have a place to talk with people about my crazy ideas to integrate economics, finance, and non-equilibrium thermodynamics into something that actually works--as opposed to macroeconomics and modern portfolio theory.
This is a photo of a happy me receiving my appointment certificate from Cheng Siwei, Dean of the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Management School (GUCAS). As I wrote earlier today, Cheng Siwei's day job is vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
My duties will be to give several lectures each year to the CAS faculty and graduate students and to supervise PhD dissertations (I have my first graduate student already--a wonderful person named LI hong, who is writing about venture capital and innovation. And I will teach a 4 week course this summer exploring ways to use recent advances in non-equilibrium thermodynamics in economics and finance.
The best part of the day was my visit with Cheng Siwei after the ceremony. More on that later.

Dr. Rutledge: Please explain the meaning and use of "non-equilibrium
thermodynamics". I'm sure I am not alone in my ignorance among your

Hello JR,
My sincere congratulations on your appointment as "Honorary Professor" This is a great honor, and you should be very proud, very proud!
As an aside note: About 6/7 years ago Dowling had a program at Shanghai University and a small revolution of sorts upset the plan for MBA graduate students to come to the USA to complete their program. So, I was assigned 6 students to do their thesis work over the internet. This was a very exhilarating experience for me. Once again, HUGE Kudos for JR :):):) on his new ventures into the Academy.

Good point John, pro-growth states like NV, AZ, FL are doing just fine. Even my future home state GA is talking about abolishing the income tax. I take that back INNOVATION is used in the Southeast and Mountain West, but up here in the Northeast.....as we say here in Joisy aka Corzineland, FUGEHTABOUTIT. I have said it time and time again that we arent just competing with China or India, but from a state to state level we are competing with Georgia and Arizona. Nations are competing for capital and so are states. The Northeast is the only region of this nation that is losing human capital but hey dont tell that to Corzine, Spitzer, or Schumer.

I agree that vice Chairman Cheng Sewei is impressive. A picture of our meeting with him in the Gtreat Hall of the People from our fifth trip to China, Nov. 2005 hangs in my State Chamber office. Look forward to reading your recap of your meeting.

INNOVATION......John, is it me or has it been ages since I have heard a US politician use that word. You mean us....Americans.....be innovative....why you must be kidding John, you know that word doesnt belong in the American vocabulary anymore. Just the other day Mama Clinton was talking about taking profits from oil companies, and just to think she has spent all this time running to the center. I knew she couldnt surpress those socialist tendencies for long.

Amen! There is one person I want to name as the exception to this rule. John Ensign, Senator from Nevada (0% tax rate) is keenly interested in the subject. I have had the pleasure of working with him at meetings with Nevda business owners. Great guy.
